Fast Turnarounds, Clean Compliance: How Midland Deburr & Finish Is Helping UK Manufacturers Win Export Orders

As signs of renewed momentum ripple through UK manufacturing, one theme is becoming hard to ignore: exports are back on the agenda. January’s PMI data showed new export orders rising for the first time in four years, with manufacturers reporting stronger demand from Europe, the US and China. For many firms, however, the opportunity to sell abroad is only as strong as their ability to deliver parts that meet exacting international standards—on time and without compromise.
That is where specialist finishing and cleaning suppliers such as Midland Deburr & Finish are playing a quietly pivotal role.
Based in Lye in the West Midlands, Midland Deburr & Finish has built its reputation on fast, reliable metal deburring and high-integrity metal degreasing, including vapour degreasing and solvent degreasing. These processes may sit at the end of the production chain, but they are increasingly central to manufacturers’ ability to export components into regulated and quality-critical markets.
“Export customers don’t make allowances for rough edges, contamination or delays,” said Chris Arrowsmith, managing director of Midland Deburr & Finish. “If a component isn’t perfectly finished and clean, it simply won’t ship. Our job is to make sure that never becomes the bottleneck.”
The timing matters. According to S&P Global’s January survey, optimism among manufacturers has reached its highest level since before the 2024 autumn budget, while export demand has strengthened across multiple regions. At the same time, cost pressures are rising, with higher wages, national insurance contributions and commodity prices squeezing margins. For exporters, rework, scrap or rejected shipments are expenses few can afford.
Vapour degreasing and solvent degreasing are particularly critical for manufacturers supplying aerospace, automotive and advanced engineering customers overseas. These sectors require components to be free from oils, residues and microscopic contaminants before coating, bonding or assembly. Failure at this stage can result in costly non-conformances or lost contracts.
“International customers expect absolute consistency,” Arrowsmith said. “Vapour degreasing gives you repeatable, validated cleanliness levels that stand up to audit—whether that audit is in Toulouse, Detroit or Shanghai.”
Speed is another competitive advantage. As export order books recover, lead times are tightening. Midland Deburr & Finish has invested heavily in process capability and capacity to offer rapid turnaround without sacrificing quality—something that customers increasingly see as a differentiator when quoting for overseas work.
“UK manufacturers are competing globally again,” Arrowsmith added. “If we can take days out of the finishing and cleaning stage, that can be the difference between winning or losing an export contract.”
The broader economic backdrop is supportive. Stronger PMI readings and improving business confidence have added to expectations that the Bank of England will hold interest rates steady this week, giving manufacturers a more predictable environment in which to plan investment and growth. While inflation remains above target, confidence has rebounded from last year’s lows, and many firms are refocusing on markets beyond the UK.
For Midland Deburr & Finish, that means aligning its services ever more closely with exporters’ needs: reliable deburring that protects downstream processes, and degreasing systems that meet international standards first time.
“Exports are about trust,” said Arrowsmith. “When a customer overseas opens a crate and sees parts that are clean, compliant and ready to use, that trust starts with the finishing. We’re proud to help UK manufacturers put their best work on the global stage.”
As export orders rise and competition intensifies, the message from the shop floor is clear: growth does not just depend on selling more—it depends on finishing right.
